Master of Science in Accounting

The Department of Accounting offers the MSc. in Accounting to provide graduate studies in Accounting which combines both conventional and Islamic aspects which eventually producing experts who are competent in both conventional and Islamic accounting.

The programme objectives are to produce graduates:

  • With the interest to continuously enhance their knowledge and expertise.
  • With the expertise and the ability to make decisions and implement effective and relevant accounting-based solutions, based on Islamic principles.
  • Who are capable of initiating more research and development in the various sub-specialisations of accounting

The department's strength is in the areas of Islamic Accounting, Financial Reporting, Environmental Accounting, Zakat Accounting, Management Accounting, Public Sector Accounting, Accounting Education & Ethics, Auditing, Taxation, Corporate Governance and Accounting Information Systems.

The MSc. in Accounting programme comprises of 12 credit hours of coursework (4 courses) and 28 credit hours of dissertation. The total credit hours are 40.

Contemporary Issues in Accounting

A student is required to pass all the courses and attain a minimum CGPA of 3.00



After completing all the courses, students will proceed with a dissertation before they could graduate. The research proposal will be specifically developed in their Contemporary Issues in Accounting course (ACC 6010). Once they have presented their dissertation proposal and the proposal is subsequently approved by the Department's Postgraduate Committee, they may proceed with their research under the supervision of the assigned supervisor(s).

Students may enroll on a full time or part time basis. The duration of studies for both students is as follows:

 Admission Requirements

A relevant Bachelor's degree with good grades (CGPA ≥ 3.00) from an accredited institution of higher learning or any other certificates recognized to be equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and with relevant professional experience.


English Language Requirements

In addition to the Kulliyyah requirements, an applicant must produce satisfactory proof of proficiency of English Language by:

  • The Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 550 or
  • The International English Language Testing Services (IELTS) with a score of 6.0 or
  • The IIUM-administered English Placement Test (EPT) with a minimum score 6.0.
